Will "21" bring blackjack players out in force?

The movie "21" is out this week, and the main premise is that it follows the 1990s exploits done by MIT college students who were taught to card count in blackjack. The result was that they won millions of dollars in the process, so the thought is--will this mean that people will start to learn card counting as well and try to beat Vegas?

Well, it may happen, but the likelihood that it will actually produce success is slim to none. With Las Vegas casinos watching everything down to the drinks people are drinking and when, the chance that someone is going to be able to pull off a long-term card counting scam is very low. The irony is that blackjack experts say that Vegas is making a mistake by turning away card counters, because the reality is that just because you can count cards does not in fact guarantee being a winner--yes, it does give you a better edge, but not something that will mean ultimate victory for the player.

The movie will certainly bring out more blackjack players, I can almost guarantee that, much in the way that the movie "Rounders" did for Texas Hold'em. But for experts to say that card counting should be allowed just isn't feasible--let's not forget that gambling is built on huge profits, and casino owners won't give one percent of difference to players--it's why it is gambling.
