I'm fully supportive of the concept of Internet dating, but there are times when the trend seems to be stretching a little far...
For several years, PokerFaces.net has been an active portal site in the community of online poker. Through it’s interaction with quality poker players and feedback which members have provided, it was felt that there was a need to re-invent the site as a fully fledged online dating site, specifically for poker players.
Poker playing seems like a strange building block for a relationship. I'm sure that with the proliferation of online dating, there are romance sites tailored to all kinds of interests - golfing, books, chia-pets (and associated chia-products), but I don't necessarily see poker as a good starting point.
All the others are activities that can be done or discussed together as a couple, but poker is a solitary game. I don't mean this in the sense that you can play a game without any other players, but even if you're sitting down at a table of friends, you're pretty much on an island. Unless you're helping each other cheat, there isn't really a sense of teamwork, sharing, or honest communication - all things I've been told are fundamental to a successful relationship. And if you're playing online, having your partner sit in a chair next to you to bask in your gambling glory will likely not be considered by them to be a successful date (yes, even if you win...). Having that candle on top of your monitor may have a positive effect on ambiance, but the time it takes to scrape wax out of your keyboard somewhat detracts from the overall experience.
And talking about poker? Forget about it. Even as I'm telling the story of the time I hit a royal-flush on the river to beat some dude's full-house, I'm painfully aware that poker stories are about as interesting to the listener as a full account of that funny little dream you had (you know...the one where you were you, but not really you?) or having someone explain how their dog is just like a person.
I do see the advantage of having your significant other understand your hobby. If you play the game intermittently or are successful at making it a career, you may be well-served to have a mate who realizes that poker can be harmless, fun, and even lucrative. And if you find yourself losing everything you have, a similarly unskilled/unlucky loved one will at least be in no position to judge. But in the end, real love is built out of something more fundamental. Like an appreciation of hockey.
