The 6/49 trap

lotto%206-49.gifI'm not big into lotteries but I do get sucked into the office ticket trap. Under normal circumstances, when I choose not to play, there's no emotional consequence to losing. I don't know what numbers I would have played, so I don't feel like I missed out.

But whenever the pot gets large enough (like this weekend's estimated 6/49 pot of $42 million), someone in my office gets a group purchase going. Logically, I know my chances of winning are still too small to justify the purchase, but I don't want to have to take my own life should the rest of my colleagues win and dance off into early retirement without me. So I throw my two bucks in and dream with the rest of them...

That's exactly how I felt every time someone in my office hit me up for $2 for the group ticket (a.k.a. the ticket to freedom). In all the years, we never won anything more than a few free tickets. I wonder how many thousands I've sunk into the freedom ticket.

Actually, I just heard a funny story of a guy who showed up late for work and missed the usual office collection for the freedom ticket. The guy asked the office manager if he could still contribute his $1 (back then) and be included even though the tickets had already been bought. The office manager said no. So the guy goes and buys his own ticket, and subsequently wins $2.5 million. True 6/49 story. Happened about 7 years ago.
