Teenager Michael Perham sails to record

michael_perham.jpg
At age 14, I was barely able to cross my suburb single-handed, so I can't help but be a little impressed with Michael Perham.

A British teenager on Wednesday entered the record books after reaching Antigua to become the youngest person ever to sail single-handed across the Atlantic Ocean.

Michael Perham, 14, took six weeks to complete the 5,600-kilometer (3,500-mile) voyage from Gibraltar to the Caribbean island in his 8.5-meter (28-feet) boat Cheeky Monkey.

Still, I think it's a little generous for his family spokesman to label him the most famous teenager in the world (Lindsay who?), or for this to be presented as a truly odds-beating moment. With his father remaining in frequent radio contact while shadowing the entire trip in his own boat, this isn't exactly Marco Polo's voyage into the unknown.
