Super Bowl XLII Odds a little "off"

superbowl.jpg

Or are they? The New England Patriots opened up in Las Vegas and online sportsbooks at an average of 14 points, and almost immediately the line dropped by a half point. This is especially notable considering that favorites normally go up in the line in these types of games. But this isn't a normal circumstance.

Number 1, many people will probably lay money based on stats alone--that being that the Patriots are 18-0. But other individuals who follow sports betting closely already know that the Pats have beat the spread only 2 out of the last nine times, regardless of the fact that they have won them all. Combined with the fact that the Giants have basically been underdogs in every playoff game and have not only beat the spread but obviously the game--which makes that huge of a point spread awful inviting to bettors.

However, sportsbooks always play upon the fact that they get a lot of two-way action so that they obviously end up making money off of the "vig" they take and the straight money they win, so unless alot of amateur bettors come out of the woodwork and start laying large cash on the Pats, it could be a long day for the books.
