Perhaps indicative of its long-waning importance among the Las Vegas Casino hierarchy, I just caught wind of the fact that the Stardust Casino closed down about a month ago and is scheduled for demolition.
An auction was held earlier this month to sell off some 70,000 items, ranging from decks of cards to gaming tables to some of the wonderfully cheesy pieces of décor. I was in Vegas a couple of weeks before the auction and sadly missed out on the chance to buy a small piece of gambling history.
The Stardust was famous for being one of the first of the great beasts of the strip, at one point sporting the largest lit sign in the world and later serving as the model for the establishment run by Robert DeNiro in “Casino”. More importantly, it was the hotel where I stayed during my first of-age stop in Vegas, when going down $100 and later winning it back was a story that felt worth telling.
