Spain opens up first betting shop

Definition of irony: a country that is one of the heaviest betting countries in Europe that does not have legal bookmakers. Well, up until a couple of weeks ago, that definition fit the country of Spain to a "T". But--now that bookie giant William Hill has collaborated with Spanish gambling firm Codere plan to set up 70 sports betting shops across the Madrid area -- the first of Spain's 17 regions to grant licenses -- things are off and running like a bat out of hades.

So, how could that be that they are such gamblers without a way to gamble? Well, apart from a workplace/office pool or an individual betting amongst friends, Spaniards have had to go online to bet on sporting events, although the state-run lottery does offer a twice-weekly football pools game. But the new abilities are off an running, there are some limitations in place; Madrid's residents will be able to bet on social events and TV competitions like Pop Idol or Big Brother, but authorities have banned wagers on religion or politics.

Welcome to the world of gambling, Spain! Now there's no turning back muhahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!!! Just kidding....kind of.
