South Africa close to lifting online gambling ban

generic_laptop_shooting_money5.jpg

In 2004, the National Gambling Act was passed in South Africa banning online gaming, not because of anything illicit, but more along the lines so that the government could research ideas and processes to be able to regulate and most importantly, tax these sectors of business. Four years later, the lift may be lifted, but there are a few caveats that still must be discussed.

The ban was actually pretty close to sailing through until suddenly a big question was raised as the contingency of it; and that was the advertising portion and how that would be mandated. Terrestrial casinos, bingo parlors and betting on horse racing are already legal and licensed in South Africa and the majority of those firms have shown interest in entering the interactive gambling market once regulated.

Officials on record have stated that they are in no hurry to pass the legislation through and that contingencies such as the advertising issue is just a reason why; however, I would think that as big the gambling industry already is in South Africa that lobbyists and interest groups will make it happen.
