Rock, Paper, and Scissors

I love reading up on the crazy world of competitive Rock Paper Scissors (aka Roshambo). In the universe of tongue-in-cheek sporting events, this has got to be one of my favorites (though I’ll admit I’m hard-pressed to name another).

As those of us who have ever tried to settle an argument know, Rock Paper Scissors is one of the most fair and compelling decision-making processes known the world over. By taking it to the next level and developing a mechanism not only for regional and national, but also international competitions, organizers are providing a model for dialogue and problem-solving that the UN would be well-advised to follow. Land dispute with a neighboring nation? Just get a couple of your diplomats together in a room for five minutes. When that nation of warmongers inevitably tries to bury you with the "Avalanche" gambit (rock-rock-rock), show them you're a nation of talkers and counter with the "Bureaucrat" (paper-paper-paper). Or just impress your friends by breaking out the always impressive 'Paper Dolls" (paper-scissors-scissors).

I’ve always been predisposed to liking people who don’t take themselves to seriously, but there’s something extra special about those who pretend to take themselves seriously while simply looking for an excuse to meet people and drink beer. With the World RPS Championships coming to Toronto this fall, the excitement is already starting to mount.
