Following in the footsteps of Deep Blue, the computer that managed to take down world chess champion Garry Kasparov, a team of scientists that includes Jonathan Schaeffer of the University of Alberta has developed a computer meant to challenge for the poker title.
Schaeffer was part of the team that designed “Hyperborean,” a poker-playing computer that recently went undefeated at two tournaments hosted by the American Association of Artificial Intelligence.
Fortunately, the computer still seems to have trouble with top players, as it can't compete with the human ability to operate with incomplete information. While all pieces and possible moves in chess are clear to a computer, opponents' hidden cards and the ability bluff make it difficult for the program to compete at the highest levels. Which is to say, it could probably deplete my own bankroll in about 15 minutes.
