Place your bets - Senator Kyl's online gambling bill on hold

lobbyists.jpg At first I thought there was no chance Senator Kyl's bill to eliminate many forms of online gambling would pass. Then I started to worry. There seemed to be a swell of support for what I consider to be a somewhat arbitrary line in the sand declaring which kinds of gambling are acceptable and should be promoted by the government (lotteries, casinos), and which should be prosecutable offenses.

Happily, the current trend is more towards the side of reason (i.e. no ban), though it's unclear from where this call for reason spawns. Some Republican Senators have placed "holds" on the bill while they take the time to either:

a) fully weigh all the arguments for and against this important and socially defining piece of legislation; or
b) get the casino lobby to pony up more cash.

So far in 2006, the casino and gambling industry has given more than $6.4 million to federal candidates, according to the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics. That amount places it 30th among the more than 80 industries tracked by the organization.

Only 30th place? That's pitiful! Even the crop producing lobby is doing more to try to subvert the legislative process. How can I win any money playing with corn?
