Online fantasy leagues can use MLB player names, statistics

Major League Baseball, with its billions of dollars in revenues and its player's salaries reaching higher than some country's GDP, had a beef. A big beef it would appear, as they filed a lawsuit against the fantasy world and fantasy online sites for charging money to players and utilizing MLB's players and statistics "without their consent". However, a judge has ruled that under free speech rights, that online fantasy leagues can in fact utilize this information and charge a fee for it at the same time.

This is a huge victory for online fantasy sites that have been operating for what seems like forever for the fantasy type of gambling (at least 20 years, I would say). If MLB would have won, this would have limited the sites (like CBSportsline.com, for example) that people could use that already pay MLB for its information, etc. and also squelch a 500 million dollar a year business from these site owners.

My thing is--why now? It is not as if fantasy baseball is anything new, and it's not as if the league is suffering for it--in fact, it is probably making fans where it normally wouldn't because of the "gambling" aspect of it and also just for the viewership factor. Why don't you guys worry about keeping steroids out of your league instead of worrying about John Doe who just paid 30 bucks to be able to draft Alex Rodriguez? Get over yourselves!
