Online Gambling Ban Up for Discussion

house jud.bmp I can't imagine this will ever become law, but it makes me a little bit uncomfortable that it's even being discussed.

Today, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up a bill introduced by Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte (R) that would ban much online gambling, including bets on sporting events and games of chance -- namely poker, which has enjoyed a boom in recent years.

I'm not sure if it's the morality play Goodlatte claims, and he's simply concerned about a rise in gambling addiction made simpler by easy access to online casinos, or if it's really an attempt to force some sort of compromise and regulation that will lead to greater tax dollar collection.

If it's the former, I can understand the concern, but I still don't think that should cut into my leisure time. There are any number of equally damaging addictions (alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, American Idol) that are not kept from consumers. If it's the latter, I suppose I don't mind so much, as long as the extra piece comes from the casino's end.

Either way, I live in Canada, so unless they shut them down completely, I'm not ready to start worrying yet...
