New Jersey in Gambling Lockdown

ac01.jpg Budgetary squabbling at the state level in New Jersey has left many risk-seeking citizens with fewer options for long weekend leisure time.

As Gov. Jon S. Corzine began shutting nonessential government services Saturday amid a bitter intraparty budget dispute, horse racing and the lottery were the first casualties.

Fortunately, an appelate court decision has allowed thoroughbred and harness racing to continue for now, meaning the state's ample-framed denizens won't have to squeeze into bungee harnesses in order to find some thrills for the 4th of July.

Potentially on the chopping block until the situation is resolved are Atlantic City's twelve casinos, though you would think that the $2 million a day in taxes collected through the gaming parlours would be pretty useful in helping to sort out the budgetary mess.
