NFL training camps open - Pool season is underway

The hiatus is finally over. My loved ones can now fade to the background as priorities begin to reassert themselves and the dream begins anew. NFL training camps are underway.

I used to be only peripherally interested in football. Until I started gambling on games (around age 12), my NFL viewing was a simple child's appreciation of the Cowboys, built on a respect for their shiny helmets and the fact that their games seemed to on TV a lot. But my entrance into my first football pool was a right of passage into manhood (and into a better understanding of the need to shun the 'boys, even more so now with their addition of The Ego).

The opening of camps brings to the forefront many of the storylines that have been simmering over the winter. In addition to the train-wreck that is Terrell Owens' q-score, there are several interesting ones to follow:

• The Saints' return to New Orleans from Katrina-imposed exile. They will feature Bush, the explosive running back and all-purpose touchdown man from Southern California.

• James, who left Indy for suddenly free-spending Arizona, which is opening a new stadium this season.

• Roethlisberger's return to Pittsburgh from a motorcycle accident.

• Arrington's debut with the New York Giants after a less-than-amicable departure from division-rival Washington.

Now, please excuse me while I go say goodbye to my loved ones...
