NCAA Final Betting Scrutiny: Memphis-Kansas

ncaalogo.jpg

And then there were 2.

After what seems like countless minutes of basketball, watching the same TV commercials during the incessant breaks, and nail-biting performances throughout, we've made it once again to the final game, and two deserving teams are sitting in the wings waiting for the start of the championship--Memphis versus Kansas. The Tigers, who dominated UCLA and basically controlled the game from the get-go, have only lost 1 game all year and despite that, were one of the only #1 seed teams that people doubted could make it this far. Kansas, under coach Bill Self, is now in unfamiliar ground as well--he's never coached a final game.

The betting lines for this game are pretty tight--the line opened with Memphis being a 2 point fave, but within a couple of hours that line dropped a half point. And then--less than 24 hours after the line started, it is now at 1 point for Memphis. Evidently, the bettors do not agree with the books and have been pouring money onto the Jayhawks, which is kind of puzzling to me considering that Kansas streaked out to a 40-12 lead on North Carolina and the Tarheels cut it to 4 with six minutes left to go in the game, while Memphis' game was really never in doubt.

In the over-under, the line started at 145 and is now at 146. On wagerline.com, the "experts" have the line where since the line went up, 80 people have voted for the over, and 32 for the under. Apparently people are expecting quite a bit of up and down the court, high tempo and good shooting from these teams, which if that happens, for me--the better. I love to see big time basketball with great athletes on the offensive end.

Regardless, this game should be a classic.
