NBC Takes a Chance on Lottery

After another dismal television season where NBC continued to lose ground to the more popular offerings from other networks, one of the the new dramas planned for the summer involves the good fortunes of a group of largely-attractive people.

In the new summer series "Windfall," beginning at 10 p.m. June 8 on WTHR, 20 people share a pot, winning about $18 million apiece.

Premise-wise, it actually sounds like there may be some potential. In truth, any break from doctors, lawyers, police officers, and dancing c-list stars (both on and off ice) is a welcome one. Dealing with as many as 20 storylines may seem a little unwieldy, but it provides the opportunity to add or drop characters, end plots that aren't resonating, or move in a variety of direction in any given week.

Despite my youthful enjoyment of Beverly Hills 90210 (or perhaps because of it), I remain somewhat sceptical of any entertainment venture that contains the words "starring Luke Perry". But through the magic of my digital video recorder and the fact that there just isn't much else to watch in the summer (Deadwood and Entourage excepted), I'm willing to give the producers a couple of episodes to woo me. But I wouldn't bet on it.

   I bet that I won't even watch one episode because my husband will shame me into saying it's silly. Or I may have to hide in the guest room to watch it. Place yer bets.
