Manitoba Casino Denies Massive Keno Win

keno.jpg What happens when you win over $200 thousand, only to be told it was just a software error? You take them to court. Two men were playing computer Keno in a Winnipeg casino and managed to hit a five number match. Unfortunately, the casino has claimed that no real win took place.

the Manitoba Lotteries Corp. says that in some cases, a machine's software can make serious errors. It says nickel machines normally don't pay out more than $3,000.

It seems likely that there was an actual software error. Chances are the provincial body would welcome and celebrate the win for publicity reasons if the machine's revenue stream actually supported the payout. Instead, they're stuck dealing with a potential lawsuit and some egg-on-face press clippings.

I think the casino should be on the hook for the payout, even if it was just a computer error. If it had been a physical payout, where coins came cascading into buckets, it would be unlikely that the casino would try to wrest the shiny metal from the winners hands (though I question how two people could have carried off the four million or so coins). Ultimately, the machine says they won, so the money should be delivered. It would then be up to the casino to recover the funds from the US programmer who made the programming mistake that allowed the big win.
