Lotto-Litter

scratch_tickets.jpgMassachusettes State Lottery came up with an innovative idea to cut down on the amount of litter generating by people thoughtlessly disposing of losing scratch-off tickets in the streets and other public places.

To cut down on litter from scratch-off tickets, the lottery began Instant Replay. The occasional program allows people to trade in 25 used scratch offs for one new ticket.

Unforeseen, however, was the willingness for people to massively inconvenience themselves for even the smallest financial gain. As the program launched, a line-up of people a mile long bearing up to 400 hundred thousand tickets created such a hazard that the program had to be shut down.

I totally support any initiative that will cut down on litter (almost as much as I support people having enough civic pride to not chuck trash onto the street to begin with...). What surprises me is that there are that many people willing to wait, what in some cases must have been hours, to pick up a one or two free 2$ tickets. We're not even talking about receiving actual money, but rather an additional slight chance or two at winning money. Count me among those that would choose to simply dispose of the old tickets in the recycling bin and just buy a new ticket. My time is worth more than a dollar or two an hour, and I'd rather use those extra hours to be with loved ones (or pokerroom.com).
