Google recently announced that not only is the ban on online gambling sites that affect those that are "pay to play" in effect, but now they won't even let sites that are free advertise with their service. Following Yahoo!'s lead, both now in the United Kingdom are not having any advertisements allowed for companies that offer any type of gambling, either fun or for profit.
When discussed with Google, it was noted that their online community would be best served by these interests--much in due part because pay-to-play sites have tried to get around the bans previously by offering free sections--so to curtail this issue, they simply just said "No soup for you!"
MSN is currently the only search engine in the UK that is allowing such advertisements, and it remains to be seen if they will follow suit. It will be very interesting to see the ripple effect on this and how the gambling community leaders will band together or fall apart because of this loss of tremendous potential income.
