Gambling Goes to the Movies

x-3.jpg I've often felt that there weren't enough opportunities to bet on things. Sure, there are casino games, card games, lotteries, bingo, personal wagers, sport events and a thousand other options, but I'm still impressed when someone develops an opportunity to bet on a whole new slice of society.

Sportsbook.com is now letting movie-lovers place bets on, among other choices, the opening weekend grosses of X-Men 3.

What will X-Men 3 gross in its opening weekend across the U.S. (May 19 - 21)?

Gross Odds Betting Trend
----- ---- -------------
0 to 35 Million 50-1 11.6%
35.1 to 50 Million 10-1 19.0%
50.1 to 60 Million 3-1 14.4%
60.1 to 70 Million 2-1 12.6%
70.1 to 80 Million 5-2 7.5%
80.1 to 90 Million 3-1 5.1%
90.1 to 100 Million 5-1 6.8%
100.1 to 110 Million 8-1 6.7%
110.1 to 120 Million 15-1 3.5%
120.1 Million or More 20-1 12.7%

This is beautiful. Bringing sportsbook style gambling to those who don't enjoy sports. I want to see it expanded to all facets of life. Let people bet on the temperature low for next Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur. Or put $50 on the number of Asian chickens who will succumb to bird-flu. What's the over-under on the number of times Britney will endanger her child during the month of July? Or most importantly, what percentage of X-Men fans will be willing to forgo their dignity in order to show up at the premiere in full hero costume?
