Gambler's gamble on lawsuit doesn't pay off

lawsuit.jpg

I had reported a while ago on a lawsuit in the United Kingdom where a gambler who had asked an online book to not let him gamble due to his compulsive gambling problem actually did and he ended up losing a ton of money, so they were responsible for the loss. This actually prompted discussion of a world wide "black book" for those with compulsive issues shared between books for their own protection.

After the lawsuit between Graham Calvert and online giant William Hill was settled, not only is Calvert out the 2 million he claimed that Hill owed him, but the court ordered him to pay restitution fees, etc. in addition. The claim was that William Hill is not responsible was because it was the opinion of the court that Calvert's compulsive gambling problem would have caused him ot lose the money at other places if he was not allowed to do so at William Hill, so that is not their ultimate responsibility.

Hurray for justice. This claim was ludicrous to begin with, but I think that the idea of having the worldwide black book still should be followed through on---claims like this will continue regardless of precedent, so I think that no matter what--these businesses need to start protecting themselves in any way possible.
