Final Four Sports Book Overview: Memphis-UCLA

Ahhhh, the Final Four, one of America's biggest sports pastimes, much like the World Series or Super Bowl. It is the culmination of March Madness and basketball on the brain for the past few weeks for most sports fans. It is what it is--four teams standing, the best in the land, and for this year, it offers even more interesting circumstances than normal--all four number 1 seeds are left for the first time--ever. This presents huge opportunities for gambling and also for those who really know these teams--and for Vegas and online books, it really provides the most action they could possibly hope for--because of the even matchups they presumably bring.

The first game we're looking at is Memphis versus UCLA. The Bruins, who have been actually the media's darling all along in terms of the "pop" pick to win it all initially now find themselves as the underdog in the game versus John Calipari's 37-1 Tigers at +2. The line opened at Memphis favored by 1 and then went up to two after bettors started laying more heavy on the Conference USA Champions. At wagerline.com, where people can place their picks as to the odds, Memphis still has a slight favor (at the time of this writing, 596 people thought Memphis would cover versus 522 for UCLA).

Perhaps the biggest gap in this game in terms of the betting is the over/under, which is now at 134.5 after opening a point lower. I would expect for the number to go even higher, much in part to what I saw at Wagerline as well--where 898 though the over would cover versus 413. Evidently, more people think that the up-tempo that the Tigers play will control the game than the more deliberate game that UCLA seems to play.

Either way, this game should be a wonderful matchup overall, and for the books, it's heaven.
