Door slams shut on US online casinos

virtual_lock.gifAgainst the hopes of American bettors, the US Senate and Congress have delivered a mighty blow to American online gambling.

The legislation, part of a port securities bill passed by the House and Senate on Saturday, prohibits the use of credit cards, cheques and electronic fund transfers for online gaming.

Chances are the dedicated gamer will still find a way to get their money into a casino account, but for the casual player this could mean the end of convenient home play.

I'm with the cynics who feel that this has little to do with protecting those prone to losing their food and rent money and is more about ensuring that gambling dollars stay within the cozy confines of taxable brick-and-mortar US casinos. If there was a realistic way to collect taxes from the online casinos, the politicians would have found some way to come to terms with the terrible harm being done to society.
