Canada's Bingo Halls changing to casinos?

mapcanada.jpg

Ahhh, the life cycle of the economy. On one hand, we have everyone fretting that they don't have enough to go around and spending goes down which touches all areas of business around communities. However, in a paradox of epic proportions, gambling spending some times doesn't get touched by this--in fact, it some times goes up. In the case of Canadian provinces, there has been widespread talk and potential of the popular bingo halls being converted into casinos.

How is this possible? Well, in hard times, those that are already less fortunate usually turn to more desperate measures, like lotteries and gambling to try to "make up" for the money that they are either out or not going to make as they normally would--and since these bingo halls and casinos pay a nice little chunk to the government, it's probably going to be hard pressed for an opposer to get what they want in not having it spread far and deep into the provinces.

Is this a good thing? Some obviously would say yes, that it brings more life to the economy, that it brings in the necessary revenues. Others would say this is almost predatory in nature, and that again it leeches onto society's Achilles' heels in a way of speaking. I guess I look at it that as long as things are really mandated and watched for cracks in the armor both ways, no blood no foul. The reality? That won't happen...so stay tuned to see how things play out.
