BoDog down for the count

Online gambling Web site Bodog.com has been down since Monday because of a $46.6 million default judgment obtained by Las Vegas-based 1st Technology in a patent infringement case. According to court filings, software downloaded by the Web site's customers to enable some of the gaming activities infringed on patents held by 1st Technology.

Bodog.com entertainment, headquartered in the Caribbean nation of Antigua, is running off a new Web site, newbodog.com, launched Tuesday. Will this affect business? Probably a little--but not that much, as BoDog is one of the leaders in terms of sportsbooks and has the clout as well as the marketing to make it a fluid transition.

While it is a first in terms of a patent infringement case that has affected the online gambling community, industry experts say the overall effect on sportsbooks will be minimal at best.
