At age 21, I used to play in almost weekly poker games with my buddies. It was before the current hold'em boom, so we'd stick to a variety of traditional poker games or "guts". On a good week, I could take home over $100. On a bad one...lose a little bit more than that. But I never had the lofty aspirations of one Jeff Madsen.
A 21-year-old film student from Los Angeles who dipped into a college fund and his parents' wallets for his entry stakes has become the youngest player to win a World Series of Poker event.Jeff Madsen, at 21 years, 1 month, 9 days old, outlasted 1,578 players in a three-day, $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em event, to earn $660,948 and his first World Series of Poker bracelet late Sunday night.
It's clear to me where my dreams went awry. My parents never adequately supporting my gambling habit. If, instead of pushing me towards an education, they had chosen to preach the benefits of a life of cards and had staked me in my noble pursuit, I could be retired and supporting the whole family. Or, alternatively, camped out on a street-corner sporting a well-worn "Will drop pants for food" sign.
