Attention: Cliff-Diving May Be Dangerous

There's been a recent run of risk-takers injuring themselves while making the 60-foot leap from an Alabama rock ledge into the middle of an apparently too-shallow lake below. Over the past few weeks there has been a death and several injuries. Fortunately, the misfortune of others has lead responsible parties to leap into action.

Barry Mask is the state representative for Elmore and Coosa counties and has written Alabama Power to ask about fencing off the area or posting warning signs. The utility operates Lake Martin and spokeswoman Jan Ellis said the company is looking at the problem.

Inspiring! All it takes is a small amount of death and paralysis to spur authorities into making a polite request to consider putting up a sign. Even more impressive is the willingness of Alabama Power to consider taking such drastic action.

I'm a bit of a Darwinist. I support the right of an individual to choose the fun of plummeting from great heights over the relative sanity and intelligence of a look-before-you-leap policy, but if you're going to rely on this little bit of natural selection to improve the overall IQ of the nation, authorities should at least post some stats indicating the history of injury and death. At least that way, you could be sure that the people still launching themselves onto the rocks below are truly stupid, and not merely ignorant.
