Academy Awards Odds--Directing

Normally, the directing portion of the Academy Awards is really one of the more intriguing ones; last year, Martin Scorsese scored Oscar gold for the first time; and this year, amongst several excellent films, the "achievement in directing" category is one of the more tight categories again this year. Of course, it normally follows the path of best picture, and that is again true this year. Check out the nominees below:

J. SCHNABEL- THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY +450
JASON REITMAN- JUNO +1800
TONY GILROY- MICHAEL CLAYTON +2200
JOEL COEN/ETHAN COEN- NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN -360
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON- THERE WILL BE BLOOD +300

I think many people would argue that Anderson should be closer to the Coen brothers in terms of the odds; the fact is, he's the hottest thing in Hollywood after his huge critical response to There Will Be Blood. But--the fact that No Country For Old Men will probably take the Best Picture, along with the fact that the respect for the Coen brothers and their veteran status should make this category and odds remain true. I really think that Tony Gilroy should be given more credit than what he has here; Michael Clayton was an excellent film with outstanding performances. That alone--he's last in the odds department--prove that this category is indeed full of worthy contenders.
