A lot of the Oscar races are actually not as close as people would like to think. Even in the Best Picture category as I highlighted previously, it is really a race between two movies (No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood). In the individual races, some are very lopsided, but perhaps the one that is the closest in terms of the proposition betting odds are in the best supporting actress category. Check them out below:
CATE BLANCHETT (I’M NOT THERE) -130
RUBY DEE (AMERICAN GANGSTER) +250
SAOIRSE RONAN (ATONEMENT) +2500
AMY RYAN (GONE BABY GONE) -130
TILDA SWINTON (MICHAEL CLAYTON) +1250
I'm actually really surprised that Tilda Swinton is such a long shot, but the showdown between Cate Blanchett and her awesome performance of Bob Dylan and Amy Ryan's poignant turn in Gone Baby Gone should be one that goes down to the wire in terms of critical praise. Blanchett may have the edge just because she's been more mainstream and Oscar has shown his smiling face on her before. But don't count our Ruby Dee; she may get the sentimental vote as well. As for Saoirse Ronan....well, um...hey! At least you got nominated! :)
