Online gambling firm 888.com has seen first-half profit fall because of a US crackdown on offshore gaming Web sites. It reported first-half pretax profit of $19 million dollars, less than half the figure of $48 million dollars it earned a year ago, but is predicting a strong finish to 2007.
Gibraltar-based 888 pulled out of the US last year following the approval of a new law effectively banning all foreign internet gaming websites; following the American ban, 888 took action including job cuts and refocusing on non-US markets. The marketing plan is set to cash in in the last half of 2007 to either meet or exceed the 48 million it earned in 2007, but industry experts have stated that it may get darker before it gets lighter for 888.com as well as other gambling sites that have continued to reel from the US ban.
Over 10,000 readers of InsideEdge, PokerPlayer and Total Gambler magazines, cast their votes for who they wanted to walk away with a coveted UK Gambling Award. 888.com was voted Online Casino of the Year for 2006, so it has lots of pressure to make this number--or better.
